What’s the answer to Australian Film Producers when stacked against mega-budget international films and an audience with a hunger for spectacle matched only by a lack of time? Australian films’ share of the national box-office this year is falling to 2.07%, below 2013’s 3.5% and the 10-year average of 3.8%. Crap, in short. Further, very few people overseas want to watch our films either.
You can’t have “Australian Content” and true international appeal (with a few notable exceptions) because we are not (Gasp) the USA. Either you support the film industry full stop, or you insist on constraining the content and teams and damn it to being a hybrid, which is another way of saying crap.
The answer is to innovate distributions platforms, release Australian Filmmakers from the constraints of Significant Australian Content rules and thereby support a broad, dynamic and liberated industry that can work with whoever, whenever without constraints.
